Whoa Up! Bill, I have disagree. The story about the Portuguese exploiting the country has been propagated by the unlikely alliance of the Indonesian government and various left wing groups. I have never understood why some from the left claim this, but then a lot of them are a few bricks short of a load. It is true that the Portuguese did very little to develop the country - but then, there are tens of millions of people in the west who think development is an abomination (I am not one of these). Portugal 22 years ago was hardly a go ahead place and the situation in East Timor just reflected this. My understanding is that most East Timorese do not think badly of Portugal.

East Timor has, and never had, anything in the way of resources. Running the colony would have cost the Portuguese, possibly to the detriment of things in Portugal. The Marxist interpretation of history always assumes that colonies are taken and held for economic reasons. In many cases this is not correct.
