Now you're talking: <Much easier and cost effective to simply provide a $10 chip to Sierra Wireless to include a Satellite Interface into a tiny WiFi Modem/Hotspot. Then any smartphone can become a Satellite enabled phone.>

An application I came across yesterday was on Princess cruise ships.

I was talking to a purser [they run the hotel side of the ship]. I asked about internet [and communications generally]. They charge 50c a minute. Ouch!! $30 an hour. Though they do have other plans for bulk use.

Here it is [thanks Google] princess.com

It would pay guests to have an aggressively priced Globalstar service instead. Hmmmm..... sit on deck with mirasol screen cerfing the net. People nearby would be curious - they could have a turn if they buy a drink. It could be quite profitable. Heck, they could just open their own laptop and share my connection via your little wifi box, with backhaul via the "aggressively priced" Globalstar link.

Cruises do spend time away from shore, out of range of Globalstar in many places, but well within range in others. Mostly they are milk runs not too far from shore.
