Liberals aren't very independent minded and basically follow the thought line they're given.

I see it a little differently. My experience is that left wingers are less tolerant of opposing expressions of opinion. Right wingers are more tolerant than left wingers.

I think that the logic is that left wingers believe that they are for people. So anyone that disagrees with them are bigots or just anti-minority, anti-poor or anti-immigrant. Therefore, left wingers can feel noble about being a bigot against people that disagree with them.

They do not seem to understand that someone who believes that, for example, are for reducing immigration rates is not a bigot but has more noble motives (e.g. environmental, or other noble concerns about our future.)
