They did do a successful surgery, providing continuing employment to the collections department, bankruptcy attorneys, and whoever at Cook's refigures their schedule of charges. At least this did not take place at the county hospital, so my property tax will not be affected this time.

At the county hospital, of course, a large proportion of the births do constitute pre-existing conditions, since many employers in these parts don't offer any kind of insurance that workers making near minimum wage can afford (unions - what unions?), and then there is the issue of whether parents are insured, when they are often not married.
