I have seen similar things.

Most people will believe whatever they want to believe, They will cling to facts that support what they want to believe, and completely ignore facts that don't. It's very common in the Global Warming "debate" which rarely qualifies as a debate. More often than not it's a scientist and a religious person talking, and is a waste of time for both.

I have learned valuable lessons from discussions here, mainly how to keep others from wasting my time. For example, the following little conversation with would be Global Warming deniers has already saved me countless hours of frustration:

Me: If there is no global warming then explain why the North Polar Cap is melting so fast.

Them: It's not, it's thickening.

Me: No, that's the South Pole, and it's thickening only at the middle while thinning at the edges. The net result is it's thinning as well. Explain why the North Polar Cap is melting so fast.

Them: It's not. The temperatures are being manipulated. It's a conspiracy.

Me: Irrelevant, even if true. Satellite photos and ship reports clearly indicate it's shrinking. Explain why the North Polar Cap is melting so fast or quit wasting my time.

The conversation quickly peters out as they continue to try and bring up other totally irrelevant arguments, which are immediately discarded because they don't answer the question. They always leave convinced that they "really" understand what is going on, which is funny because they don't even know the difference between the North and South pole. Most understand so little that they actually think there is land under the North polar cap despite having read about submarines traveling under it.

Makes me wonder if the human race is even worth saving. The last time I asked myself that question the answer was "no".
