Gallop has run similar polls for quite a long time (30 or more years IIRC). PEW does as well. The numbers vary depending on the wording. 45% is the number that typically sticks in my head. Whats interesting is they have not shifted much over time, giving an indication of how resistant the American public is to knowledge, given the astonishing increase in genomics over that time.

BTW you can get it to shift significantly if you play with the wording to distance humans from it. Its humans & apes that cause the problem. More people are willing to think evolution applies to "animals" but if you link it to people being part of "animals" then the fraction of doubters goes up. It boils down to humans were made in the image of God about 10000 years ago (or less) while its possible everything else evolved.
