Entitlements which are paid for do not contribute to the debt. Social Security has not caused any part of the current national debt. In fact, SS taxes paid have far exceeded the payments. For the past 25 years SS has been used to reduce the deficit. Unfunded entitlments like Part D do constribute to the debt.
