I have been having the same thoughts for a few years. Initially the thinking was along the lines that the 401k offerings in our plan are really quite terrible. Now it has morphed into the above concenrs PLUS what you are mentioning.

Old situation:
I have crappy returns due to limited available funds and no hedges against flat or declining markets.

New threat:
I have crappy returns due to limited available funds and no hedges against flat or declining markets. Whatever returns I did manage to eke out or capital I did get to preserve will just be redistributed later.

Will soon do the calculation on contributions levels vs. company match levels adjusted for penalty of early withdrawal every year.
