So by your logic, if Clinton never had $5 trillion in projected surpluses and Bush never had $5 trillion in projected deficits, we can safely conclude that Obama doesn't have $8 trillion in projected deficits.

Bush had large real deficits, no need to bother with projections any more since his presidency is in the past.

Clinton had (on the average) small deficits. Again no need for projections here, we have the reality.

Obama has large real deficits, but has at least the rest of his term, and perhaps a 2nd one, to try to turn that around. Is it possible deficits will significantly be reduced? Yes it is, but his actions so far are in the other direction. Still he might get lucky and we may have an amazing recovery and sustained above normal economic growth coming out of the initial recovery period. But I wouldn't be on it.

Either all of those estimates are good or all are bad.

Nonsense. Estimates from the past that have since been shown to be false are bad estimates. Estimates from the present are harder to nail down. The current estimates look more realistic than the forward estimates during Clinton's 2nd term did, but I won't try to argue that now, since I'm sure you disagree and its not something that can be really demonstrated until years from now. So dropping that point we still have the fact that the current estimates are of unknown quality, while the past estimates have been shown to be wrong.
