So if you understand whether they have an agenda or not, you can understand whether they are stretching the truth in favor of their agenda or not.

Indeed. But you also can't brush them off based on who they are and expect to get the best answer. People who have worked in an industry to the point where they have profound knowledge of that industry know how it works and where the bones are buried. They bring something to the table that outsiders can't ever bring. So, sure, you have reservations about agendas but it isn't rational to assume that everything they have to say promotes your imagined agenda, particularly if they aren't speaking officially on behalf of that company or industry. You listen to their arguments, factor in your suspicions, and allow yourself the opportunity to be persuaded by their arguments if they make sense.

My own experience is that you can just blow off folks who spout the party line with no supporting facts or reasoning. Even if they're right, they give you nothing from which you can learn. But when offered rationales, if you listen actively and with an open mind you can make a determination about whether or not they make sense. Sure, there's a risk that someone really sharp can snow you. But there's also a risk in not listening and remaining ignorant. Also, when someone makes a statement against interest, it's almost always a gem of insight. But you lose the opportunity to find those gems if you write someone off automatically.
