re: ..>>It is discouraging to see progressives become fuzzy over our imperialistic wars. In fact, the /New York Times/ recently editorialized in support of Obama's expanding war in Afghanistan.
It was not long ago when almost every progressive leader and newspaper voiced harsh words for Bush's war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Now that Obama is in charge, that anti-war sentiment is changing. It appears that it is okay for a Democrat administration to engage in war, but not a Republican one.
As I have always said, we should always put "principles over party." We need to be consistent supporters of peace, not distracted by political pragmaticism.
And so it goes back to the Vietnam era as now..
So driving back from the trail head after my daily hike, I listened to our local "progressive" talk radio show.. A local guy of "liberal" persuasion that is trying to figure out the Dems new love of Bush's wars, like I am.. So he told a story about an old, CONSERVATIVE neighbor of his who has since passed on... BTW, A good guy of the Ike/Goldwater niche, of which the talk show host got along with very well..
So this old guy told the talk show host that during the Vietnam era, he had a friend that was a Dem, that told him if he voted for Goldwater, he WOULD have continued war in Vietnam, so he voted for Goldwater in 64, and guess what?
He got continued WAR in Vietnam.. <BNG>
It's like me, telling my good friend T, a conservative who doesn't like war, "If you vote for McCain in 08, we will have continued war in A and I.. And although I know he voted for JM, he could come back say, although he hasn't, "Yes, I voted for McCain and YES, we have continued war..:( |
