4/1/10 Update Rumor has it that at this year's Obama Seder a Fifth Question was added to the traditional Four: "Why does the stock market keep going up?" The answer was not to be found in the Haggadah but, according to Rahm Emanuel, it's because the Lord has decided to inflict an 11th Plague: "The slaying of the shorts." With the markets shut for Good Friday, the trading week wound up today, April Fool's Day. At the close, the Nasdaq Composite Index was up 5.88% YTD (vs. up 5.55% YTD at last Friday's close), while the Nasdaq Biotech Index closed up 12.38% YTD (vs. up 11.82% YTD at last Friday's close) and the Contest median closed up 12.33% YTD (vs. up 14.08% YTD at last Friday's close). If indeed it's true we're experiencing a plague on shorts, the Lord certainly made an exception for those who shorted GNVC. In GNVC's case it was the longs who were victims of the Lord's wrath and the consequences were significant for the Contest rankings. With WYD's portfolio being severely wounded by GNVC's slashing, first place RKRW's portfolio (up 44.08% YTD) now has a clear lead. Moving into second place is GHMM's portfolio (up 39.60% YTD). At Thursday's close, 28 of the 32 Contest portfolios remain in the black and 16 of the 32 are beating the NBI. Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the week's Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks ranked by % Gained and % Lost for the week (foreign stock prices are not converted to US$ in these two tables). Have a wonderful holiday weekend biotechies! (All corrections, especially adjustments for splits, greatly appreciated.)
