don't think the legal residents are costing the hospitals all that much. Some might resort to high-risk behavior (such as avoiding having a minor injury checked out before it gets worse), but many of them simply go to community clinics or just pay out-of-pocket.

A year ago, I got bit by something.....it looked like a spider bite but I wasn't sure....and if it was spider, I didn't know what kind....we have the recluse spider up here whose bite can lead to amputation. During the course of the day, it worsened and yellow gunk was pouring down my leg. A friend got worried and strongly suggested I go to the ER since it was a Sunday. Got to the ER....waited 2 hours to fill out the form. Another hour to see the MD. I kept asking how much this would cost since I have never been to the ER before.......no one could tell me. Finally, I saw the MD.....she took all of 2 minutes with me. Told me it was definitely a spider bite but not the recluse. Gave me two pills and that was it. The bill came to $750. I went ballistic....asked why it cost so much. The answer: too many people are uninsured and don't pay their bills. My cousin in FLA concurred.
