Mooney to stick with Richmond

INDIANAPOLIS -- Richmond's Chris Mooney spent Thursday at Boston College interviewing for its coaching job.

He arrived in Indianapolis for the Final Four and decided his future was where he felt most comfortable -- back at Richmond.

Mooney told ESPN.com Friday he accepted a seven-year extension with the Spiders. He said staying at Richmond had nothing to do with BC. Mooney wasn't offered the Eagles job but according to a source he was the top choice of Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo.

Mooney led the Spiders to 26 wins this season, going 13-3 in the Atlantic 10 and earning an at-large berth and No. 7 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Spiders lost to Saint Mary's in the first round in Providence.

Mooney is 101-91 in five seasons with Richmond after an 18-12 one-year stint at the Air Force Academy. Mooney has improved the Spiders' record in each of the last three seasons and returns A-10 player of the year Kevin Anderson next season.

Boston College has also interviewed former Eagles assistant and current Fairfield coach Ed Cooley and Cornell coach Steve Donahue. Former BC assistant and current Northeastern coach Bill Coen is supposed to interview next week. DeFilippo fired BC Al Skinner after 13 seasons last week.
