Celgard attributes U.S. growth to stimulus money

by BETH SHAYNE / NewsChannel 36

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Celgard's corporate headquarters in Charlotte already employs 390 people. In the coming months, management says, they'll hire 80 more.

The producer of parts for lithium batteries plans to expand the Charlotte facility and build new in Concord with a $49 million matching grant from the Department of Energy handed down in 2009.

The Charlotte expansion is already underway. "We've already added 60 new hires since we received this grant," Mitch Pulwer, Celgard's Vice President and General Manager said.

Construction on the Concord facility is set for the second half of 2010. It will add 209 jobs.

In total, the expansion will cost $100 million.

Pulwer said it will increase Celgard's market share from 25 percent of their industry to 40 percent of the industry.

"We would have done this expansion with or without the stimulus. The stimulus absolutely insured that the investment was in the United States," said Bob Toth, President, CEO, and Director of Polypore, Inc., parent company of Celgard.
