Bharti Airtel has announced that Unity consortium, of which it is a part, has inaugurated Unity undersea cable system across the Pacific Ocean. The 9,620 km cable system has been built at a cost of $ 300 million by NEC Corporation, a Japanese technology company, and USA-based TE SubCom (formerly Tyco Telecommunications).
The cable connects Japan to the west coast of the United States, providing high speed bandwidth access across Asia Pacific. It will provide direct connectivity between Chikura on the coast of Japan near Tokyo, and Los Angeles, Palo, Alto and San Jose on the west coast of the United States. The five fiber pair Unity cable system will deliver up to 4.8 terabytes per second (Tbps) of bandwidth across the Pacific, with each fiber pair having a capacity of up to 960 Gbps. Related News

Rajan Swaroop, executive director, enterprise services, Bharti Airtel, said in a company statement, "Unity cable system commencement is a marked achievement for the telecom infrastructure of the region, offering another connectivity option for AsiaPac to connect to the United States west coast." Construction of the system was first announced in February 2008 by the Unity consortium which comprises Bharti Airtel; Global Transit, a provider of IP transit network in South Asia; Google; Japanese telco KDDI Corporation; Pacnet, a telecom and internet provider in Asia; and SingTel. |
