25 dead in W.Va. mine blast, worst since 1984

As many people here know, I have been in many mines and one thing that is common around the world is a sense of brotherhood that exists between these miners. I think it is the inherent danger associated with mining...especially coal mining, that makes them "Brothers in arms". And mining towns are generally smaller or rural, where everybody knows everybody else. Very tragic.

But one thing about most miners I have met is that it isn't really "what they do", it is "who they are". Without exception, every miner I have met is keenly aware of the danger in their work environment. In every mine that I have been in (except one) everyday before the miners go down, they have a safety talk with the supervisors.

I haven't been to the Performance mine, but I have worked pretty extensively in a mine about 10 miles from there.

Very tragic.
