>>Koan, it's not about democrats versus republicans or your experience in Alaskan politics. People with a lot of experience can still say stupid things. Heck, I could use your logic and say that if Roosevelt had not been elected we would never have entered WWII.<<

You could say if FDR had never been elected, but Hoover had won we woul dnever have had the New Deal or social security or strengthening of unions.

In Alaska it was liberals versus conservatives, not dems versus Republican's. Conservative's do not like big government. So they hated the idea of government taking 25% of all oil income and saving it for the kids. And the Permannt fund is a gigantic government program with 45 billion in it.

When we liberals were putting it together in the 70's the conservatives fought us every step of the way. Blood in the streets fight.

The final deal which allowed us to pass the permanent fund and put it in the constitution was a deal the Republcian's demanded giving the oil companies a huge tax break. That was what the Republican's wanted to pass the legislation.

So we gave the oil companies the ELF tax break. Total give away to the oil companies. After the Valdez oil spill we managed to repeal that tax exemption by one vote and a dem Mike Symanski had to fall on his sword for us to get that final vote i.e. he double crossed the Republican's and told them he would vote against lifting the tax break and then voted for it.

He never ran for elected office again. Couldn't.
