My opinion, though, is that the GOP purists are destroying the party. The GOP can't be purist and win enough votes to retake the majority in Congress or the Presidency. They have to be bigger tent.

I am also on the Frum side.

My opinion, though, is that the GOP purists are destroying the party.

But I think you are making a value judgment there based on the side you're on. The purists would say that the big tent destroys the party because winning is worthless if in doing so you destroy what you stand for.

One of the things I learned in my work life is that you sometimes have to choose between being right and being effective. No matter how strongly I believed in some course, if pushing it strongly took me out of play on the issue, I backed off. Better to be in a position of influence than be pure but out of play. But I struggled with that enough to understand why some would choose to be pure in the wilderness.

What I don't understand is how any R could not recognize how threatening the caterwauling of the purists is to any chance of ever achieving majority party status. I don't understand how they think they cold become a majority party without toning it down. Well, maybe I understand it. If you're in an echo chamber, you assume that the folks outside are inclined just like they are. That's a mistake.
