Your right that the long term fiscal imbalances are the main problem, but they are mainly caused by very large projected increases in spending.

A vast increase in social service spending is only unavoidable if we decide not to avoid it.

If we do decide not to avoid it the portion of the GDP being spent by the federal government may double (and not just taxes on "the rich", taxes overall). I submit that would be strongly detrimental to this country, whether it means we collapse in a major fiscal crisis, or whether it means federal taxes have to double (or more than double since we are currently under a deficit).
