Toning what down?

Tea Party/Fox/talk radio rhetoric and antics. To moderates they look scary, not like a group with whom you'd like to ally.

If they want to be a majority party they have to expand the tent enough to get a critical mass of moderates, whatever it is that will appeal to moderates at the time. You're right that if that alienates the core conservatives, that might not produce a net gain. My point is that the purists have to make the choice between being relatively pure or being in power. Can't have both. They can choose to be alienated, sulk, and throw tantrums, which throws the game to the D's. Or they can work constructively on an agenda that will grab a majority, however distasteful elements of it might be.
