"Lots of things lead to dictatorships." Sure. There are many historical models. "Foolishly electing a president and giving his party overwhelming control of Congress would be one way to move that direction" Purely speculative. It hasn't happened yet. The scenario I described is one of the more common ones of the times it has happened.
