I can understand why Obama is the way he is easier than I can understand why he has so many followers.

About 20 - 30% of the voters are progressives/liberals, so they like Obama. Among the rest, Obama was the Democratic nominee in a Democratic year, and was careful to look moderate on campaign, aided by an adoring press. Old party affiliations die hard, but conditions are shaping up to see the rebirth of Reagan democrats, if the Republicans offer a candidate who can claim them.

Update: Dick Morris is now predicting that Republicans will take both houses of Congress in November:

Presaging the Republican sweep that looms ahead, is the shift in the party ratings on various issues. Rasmussen has the Republicans ahead by 49-37 on the economy and 53-37 on health care. His likely voter poll shows GOP leads on every major issue area: national security (49-37), Iraq (47-39), Education (43-30), Immigration (47-34), Social Security (48-36), and Taxes (52-34).

When Republicans are winning issues like education, healthy care, and social security – normally solidly Democratic issues – a sweep of unimaginable proportions is in the offing.
