"Is it possible that this is not a virus but someone using legitimate Mailer Daemon emails that I have gotten to access my computer?"

Sure. Look up 'worm' sometime. What could have happened is that the virus accessed your phonebook and sent the content to somewhere else. That is what a worm does. Looks for information and forwards it somewhere else. The novel "Shockwave Rider" invented this concept in the 1970s.

Umm, not to alarm you or anything, but do you have credit card or bank info stored on your computer? It is also possible that the virus had a keyboard logger. So, in addition to rifling data from your computer, it may have also logged data you entered from the keyboard for your various accounts. You might want to be sure you aren't being fleeced.

"I also am going to call my ISP and see if they can block these Mailer Daemons coming from that IP. Does that make sense?"

They can only block stuff going to their clients. There is no way in general to block all stuff from a particular domain across the whole Internet.
