Having shadowstats as another source of information is fine, but I don't know how good their stats are.

Maybe their unemployment numbers are ok, but if you take their inflation numbers and adjust nominal GDP increases downwards by these numbers, then it would indicate that we have been in a recession for a long time. I'm not talking about a long time in terms of longer than the normal recession, but rather for many years, or perhaps even decades (its been quite some time since I did the calculation, I don't remember the details enough to give the exact time frame).
