NextLevel Systems' Satellite Data Networks Business Launches New Digicipher II Satellite Receiver to Serve Private Network Customers
NextLevel to Jointly Market Unit With ONE TOUCH Systems' Front Row(TM) Technology
ANAHEIM, Calif., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- NextLevel Systems, Inc. (NYSE: NLV) announced at the 1997 Telecon show here today that its Satellite Data Networks business has launched a new DigiCipher(R) II product which offers private network customers a data delivery interface and new multicast technology in addition to traditional high quality MPEG-2 video. Among other innovations, the new product incorporates hardware and software developed by Intelligent Devices, Inc. (IDI) which enables an Integrated Receiver/Decoder (IRD) with a 10baseT interface to connect directly and non-invasively to a local area network (LAN). The new product can deliver video to the desktop, Intranet access, and high speed file transfer, all at rates up to 9Mbps without sacrificing traditional broadcast video and audio delivery. NextLevel also announced an agreement with StarBurst Communications Corp. to use StarBurst's Multicast File Transfer Protocol (MFTP) software with NextLevel's DigiCipher II satellite system for reliable point-to-multipoint data distribution using reliable IP multicast, giving NextLevel customers a fast, efficient end-to-end system option for distributing software updates, business-critical information, and multimedia files to multiple sites. To further enhance the appeal of NextLevel products in the distance learning market, NextLevel and ONE TOUCH Systems, Inc. plan to jointly market ONE TOUCH's new "Front Row" interactive distance training desktop product with the new DigiCipher unit. "By enabling the delivery of streaming data via satellite, this cooperative effort will allow live, interactive communications and training to be distributed throughout organizations reliably and cost effectively while minimizing impact on network resources," said John Glass, Vice President of Marketing for NextLevel's Satellite Data Network business. "Together, NextLevel and ONE TOUCH can offer business and educational customers reliable, scaleable, cost-effective distance learning networks which can reach thousands of locations anywhere in the world. "We are excited to be able to offer a new product to our private network customers so they can augment their video network needs with a reliable data delivery system," said Glass. "This new receiver will allow business and educational customers the flexibility to design a satellite network that meets multiple needs and avoids significant expense by efficiently distributing data files across the country." "This technology partnership between NextLevel Systems and IDI provides systems features and benefits that enable our clients to more fully leverage their existing satellite based communication infrastructure," said J. Mitchell Robinson, President and Chief Operating Officer of Intelligent Devices, Inc. "These open architecture and technological advances, especially in business satellite communications networks, enable us to combine a router, a bridge and a protocol converter on a single circuit board that can be readily integrated into other products, as in NextLevel's latest product offering. It is this technical product approach that paves the way for high-speed data and video to the desk top." "StarBurst is pleased to partner with NextLevel Systems to bring the benefits of reliable IP multicast to NextLevel's private satellite network customers," said StarBurst President and CEO Harland LaVigne. "Reliable multicast file transfer over satellite is an extremely cost-effective way to deliver large amounts of information to many remote sites." "The significance of this new NextLevel Systems product is that customers will be able to very quickly deploy advanced applications like ONE TOUCH Front Row(TM) over existing satellite networks very easily without complex upgrades or reconfiguration," according to Ken Chow, Director of Business Development for ONE TOUCH Systems. Glass said that NextLevel has provided the DigiCipher II or MPEG-2/DVB based technology for the installation of private network and distance learning systems at more than 30,000 customer sites around the world. Among NextLevel's customers are The Ford Motor Company, The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), State Farm Insurance Company, South Carolina Educational TV and the U.S. government's Health care Financing Administration (HCFA).
