Had we worked more closely with the Soviets and been more generous regarding terms we could, perhaps, have avoided slaughtering thousands of civilians and being the only country to ever use a nuclear weapon. On balance, I think it would have been worth a try- but I'm not much for killing civilians- even if the other side was bad, or worse, or whatever.
