We don't know about the number, but we do know many American soldiers (most probably in the tens of thousands) would have died had we gone ahead with the plans to invade Okinawa and then Japan had not the nukes ended the war.

What was your father's take on that--if you know?

(I certainly know what the VFW felt about it in NJ in the 1950's when they demanded that an English teacher at our high school be fired for teaching "Hiroshima" (by John Hersey)too sympathetically.
