It is not the same situation (dropping the A-Bombs) as to the examples you posit.

Those, are more or less, black and white examples.

Here you have to say that x thousands of American Soldiers (who didn't start this conflict) will have to die vs the known mostly civilian casualties of Hiroshima nad Nagasaki.

As far as a blockade goes---I have no information on that, but I have never heard that this was a viable option under consideration. One has to think the fanatical military leaders of Japan would not have been swayed by any blockade.

In ideal rational world it seems like a way out, but war is seldom rational and most of the country was united in just wanting the war to end and bring the sons, daughters, and husbands home. These decisions were not made in some vacuum.
