There were undoubtedly individuals who felt like yourself in 1945, but I can say they were in the minority. It's a Democracy. Decisions are made in that context. That is the same reason most states still have the death penalty. It's not that you are not on some higher moral plane according to the philosophors/deity's---it's that our human decisions in our political framework only partially incorporate those standards. The frame of reference for the country (at the time) is not the one by which you are judging it now. I don't know what else we can say about it.
