I certainly agree it is/was complicated situation. I was trying to add a personal view to the historical one to give it some emotional context.

Certainly not a scholarly approach to the question. I wonder if there is any study on the national psyche in 1945 that would use psychology to explain the history in that context? It don't think it is strictly possibly to understand the decision simply in historical terms.

Once nation's existence has been threatened all kinds of other (non-rational)elements come into play--IMHO.
