We were less "diversified" in terms of the "face" and "voice" of "society".

We were three Americas- white (which got all the face time, and had all the jobs- and which was also mostly male), black and other minorities. It's no wonder you'd look back and think America was less diverse- anyone not in the white male minority (and white males were a minority if you add white women and all other minorities together) had very little power and thus no voice. If you surveyed all white males in this country today you'd probably think America wasn't all that diverse- though white males are more diverse than they used to be- but still, you get my point I hope.
