When I'm there I like to take note of which mountain peak the sun rises behind. Every day it's a little different. If I had good enough records I could tell the date by looking at the sunrise.

On the 1st and 15th of every month, find a permanent marker, like a post. At the same time (8:00 AM ?) every morning on those dates, place a river rock or something at the end of the shadow of that marker on the ground. After a year, you'll have a pretty good calendar that looks like a skewed figure eight.
