Gore was promoting telecommunications as an engine for economic growth since the 1970s

Obviously, you've been reading the Kahn/Cerf politically motivated defense of Gore's statement.

But the statement in itself is full of holes. For example:

"When the Internet was still in the early stages of its deployment, Congressman Gore provided intellectual leadership by helping create the vision of the potential benefits of high speed computing and communication."

Gore, of course, DID sit on the House Committee on Science and Technology. But who amongst us did NOT know of the "potential benefits of high speed computing and communication". I can't speak for you, but this was the essence of my daily work life at the time; and I can tell you that Al Gore had nothing to do with "creating" any such "vision". Sorry, that just didn't happen.

"As an example, he sponsored hearings on how advanced technologies might be put to use in areas like coordinating the response of government agencies to natural disasters and other crises."

Fine. But where is the nexus with the "Internet" as we know it today? And in fact, you couldn't get Internet if you tried in NOLA during Katrina.

Kahn and Cerf are both liberals and as such chose to cover Al Gore's ass. Their statement cannot be backed up in any way, shape or form.
