Those who aren't left or right aren't always middle, often they are "nothing" in terms of having a coherent set of political ideas that fits on the left-right spectrum.

And you dismiss them as a middle because they don't fit on your left-right spectrum? Sounds like your prejudice... not theirs. I'm sure they wouldn't agree with your author that they are indifferent or ignorant.
