Wait until you're on the wrong end of the means testing while you don't perceive yourself having all that much in the way of means... <g>

The other problem is the breach of contract. When you've been paying into a system for decades on the basis that everyone would get equal benefits, then, just when you are about to collect, you find yourself drastically means tested, it ain't fun.

In principle, means testing is OK in that welfare benefits go only to those who need them. For non-welfare distributions, not so much. For the latter, the better solution would be not to have those systems in the first place. Then you wouldn't have to means test them.
