04/13 17:50 =DJ Intel CEO: High-End PC Chip Demand 'Particularly Strong'

By Jerry A. DiColo
Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Demand for high-performance computer chips has been " particularly strong" as corporate customers begin spending on technology again, Intel Corp. (INTC) Chief Executive Paul Otellini said.

During a conference call to discuss the chip maker's first-quarter results, Otellini also said Intel plans to speed up the rollout of two new chip factories, which now are expected to start producing chips beginning in the fourth quarter of this year.

Intel, which makes chips for the vast majority of the world's computers, reported record first-quarter results Tuesday, helped by strong demand for new products and a return of business spending.

By moving up the openings of two new facilities employing 32-nanometer manufacturing technology, Intel will be able to produce more high-performing chips at potentially lower costs. Currently, chip makers are having trouble meeting a rebound in demand from customers amid the broader economic recovery.

"We're ramping the 32-nanometer factories as fast as we can," Otellini said.

Intel shares were recently up 3.3% to $23.53 in after-hours trading.
