The Russians think about a lot of things, but remembering the negative results of KAL 007 shoot down, and the considerably less turmoil over poisoned politicians (Ukranine) and dissident oligarchs (Polonium in the UK), I expect they would look for the lower profile methods.

This is reasonable, unless you see Russian as being run by a bunch of reckless cowboys, instead of disciplined martial arts trained chess players.

Fog creation might be hard, putting out a lot of smoke is much more possible. So maybe they released smoke to force the plane to land elsewhere...

Getting the pilot to screw up is possible, but difficult.

However, pilots wanting to land really bad, and then landing really bad... sh*t (pilot error) happens
