2 dead gray whales wash ashore in Skagit
April 12, 2010 - 12:00 PM
by Staff Report

Two dead gray whales have been found this week in Skagit County washed ashore near Deception Pass and Samish Island. One of the gray whales that was beached on the north shore of Samish Island was measured at 42 feet long.

Whale experts will perform necropsies to determine what caused the whales’ deaths, said Howard Garrett of Orca Network, a Whidbey Island-based nonprofit marine mammal advocacy group.

Although there are reports that the whales might be “skinny,” biologists have not made any determinations, Garrett said.

Also unknown today is whether the two deaths are related to any of the four documented attacks on gray whales by transient killer whales, including the televised attack Sunday on “Patch,” a gray whale who has been visiting Puget Sound for about 20 years, Garrett said.

For a detailed account of the gray whale deaths, see Tuesday’s Skagit Valley Herald.
