I look at it from the other direction.

$10 a gallon gasoline in the United States would support a crude oil price of over $300 a barrel.

A person driving Prius would still be able to travel for about 20 cents a mile in gasoline expenses.

Gasoline consumption would certainly be greatly reduced with $10 price, but people would still buy it. It would be worth $2.00 to carry a hundred pounds of groceries home.
