"I'm not going to defend Inode's "who cares if we're killing off species" comment."

That's good.

Extinctions happen. But we are in the middle of an extinction event that rivals some of the largest in the geological record. Ok, a bit of hyperbole, at least so far. This particular extinction event has only been going on for 10k years or so, increasing exponentially. And the extinction rate is going up, not leveling off or going down. At some point, and it needs to be soon, that has to change. Or we really will live through a period where we wipe out a significant fraction of extant species.
