Alternatively, the flashed orders tend to suck, on average, when used to buy more thin, illiquid stocks.

i tend to trade in more illiquid stocks than eric. i find if i have any size in a somewhat illiquid position, i virtually have to do it via hidden orders, parcel it out slowly, etc. if i show anything or try flashing, what i'll see happen is someone will usually use ARCA or BATS to jump in front, and if it's something i want to get out of, i'll see trades go through at 1/100 of a cent AHEAD of my flashed order (1/100 can't happen for me or 'you', but that's another issue entirely).
