Baird raises Dell to outperform

* Raises price target to $21 from $17

April 16 (Reuters) - Robert W Baird upgraded Dell Inc (DELL.O) to "outperform" from "neutral," citing improving trends in the IT hardware industry.

"We expect the company to benefit from improving trends in IT hardware with an attractive valuation more than offsetting execution-related risks," analyst Jayson Noland said in a note to clients.

After over a year of depressed spending on technology purchases, global personal computer shipments rose sharply in the first quarter, according to industry estimates released on April 14.

Noland, who raised the stock's price target to $21 from $17, said he expects corporate PC spending to accelerate through the year and sees Dell as a significant beneficiary with PCs representing 55 percent of revenue excluding peripherals.

The analyst said he saw a gradual start of replacement cycle in the second half of 2010. He quoted Intel (INTC.O) as saying that first quarter of 2010 was the first quarter of "real signs" of corporate PC purchases.

Shares of Dell rose about 1 percent in trading before the bell. They closed at $16.86 Thursday on Nasdaq. (Reporting by Juhi Arora in Bangalore; Editing by Gopakumar Warrier)
