What the hell does the fact that gas prices go up have to do with the dems commitment to energy independence? The D's, being redistributionist, tend to be more unsettled by financial hits to the little guy, seems to me. I would expect them to try to shelter their constituencies from the hits with further redistribution, price controls, subsidized gas, whatever, which would enable fossil fuels to be burned apace.
