Well, if it does not make a difference, why is it done?

We have to get tax revenues from somewhere. It's more politically palatable to get them from big, bad corporations than from people, who vote. It feels better to have low tax rates while paying higher prices for products from corporations that have been taxed. Voters react from their guts, not with their brains. Populism at work.

That's over-simplified, of course. There are also specific corporate taxes intended to engineer the economy. But by and large, it's because voters wouldn't tolerate the higher individual tax rates, even if it could be shown that they would be better off on net. Taxing the deep pockets is instinctive, just like taxing rich individuals.

Suggest cutting corporate tax rates and you get a populist backlash, guaranteed. Plus the government loses some ability to micromanage industry.

The key seems to be defining WHY corporations pay taxes IF they are not really separate entities with any rights.

I don't think it has anything to do with rights. It's simple pragmatism.
