Secondly, people can easily let their feelings about whatever ideological bogeymen they see cloud their perceptions of things.

Yes, absolutely. I think that perfectly describes the GOP. I'm a pragmatist. I say let's drill, baby, drill, but let's not lose sight of the fact that drilling more simply won't solve our problems.

But let's look at the evidence for the GOP being bought and paid for by the oil companies. First, the GOP receives 3 times as much oil money than Dems:

Second, who were our leaders over the last decade? Cheney was a former Haliburton CEO. Bush Jr came from oil money. Jr's father was personal friends with the Saudi family. Look, it's just common sense. As I posted recently on the Politics of Energy thread, 88% of federal energy tax incentives over the last decade went to the oil and gas industry. Another recent study showed that 80% of the subsidies went to fossil fuels versus renewable energy:

Keep in mind that the GOP's favorite mantra is that we shouldn't give tax incentives to the renewable energy industry because that would upset the free markets and would give renewable energy an unfair advantage over other forms of energy. They don't want our government to pick and choose the marketplace winners. Well, my gosh, then let's stop giving the oil and gas industry 80-88% of all federal energy tax incentives. That will level the playing field mighty quick.
