The only problem I had with Gordon Brown when he sold the UK's gold was that I could not buy very much of it. Gold and the miners have kept me in the game since July 2000.

One thing that was clear at the time was that the Fabians were either incompetent, corrupt or (more probably) both as one trait seems to follow the other. Big bankers were in Browns company while he was Chancellor of the Exchequer at 11 Downing Street.

The focus is now squarely on the "irresponsible behaviour of a few bankers". Those few bankers include Sir Fred Goodwin. The former chief executive of RBS was one of a handful of top bankers to be granted regular Number 11 audiences while Mr Brown was Chancellor and was knighted for services to banking in 2004.

Mr Brown ignored questions yesterday about whether he had changed his opinion of Sir Fred, a Scot who he shared many traits with. But surely he must have. He was at the wheel when RBS entered into deals which ultimately led to billions being written off, often to foreign individuals and firms.
