What does it matter that the deductions are available to everyone as long as when they are used by a family at that earnings level, the result is no income tax paid?

That gets to the righteousness of the taxation system. It is for instance true that a very rich person whose income is derived primarily from investments pays an even lower total tax rate than the poor slob with family of four scraping by on $50K. Where do you want to take this argument? Do you want to further tax the family of four with an AGI of 30K for instance, after that same family pays full SS and Medicare, state taxes, sales taxes on practically everything they make, etc......that's what the article is talking about, ok? The morality of taxing the poor.
