< How can ANY modern person fail to grasp these facts?> It's like a "coupled reaction" in Chemistry... you have a large "payoff" at the end of the reaction which can drive many reactions that "don't make sense" on their own. For example if you have a powerful enough belief that (your convoluted) god is hateful and doesn't like "something"... you do all sorts of self damaging (and damaging to others as well of course) and energy wasting things because of the perceived "payoff" at the end. If your belief has been instilled strongly enough, you'll kill people (and then) even yourself.
