Whether an employee is using the old-fashioned mechanical cash register or a modern electronic version, the value added by the worker is the same. The difference is how the work is integrated into the whole system, but that system is determined by other people.

Another factor you are neglecting is immigration. If someone comes to this country and says, "$8/hour is plenty money for me," the market value of the work goes down. This is because someone just demonstrated a willingness to work more for less.

That's why you're never going to get anywhere with this "living wage" argument, because the definition of "living wage" is much bigger than what your liberal conscience is willing to accept.
